How to treat baby colic

How to treat baby colic
Colic. The eternal theme that 1 out of every 4 babies suffers. There are different degrees and a great misunderstanding on the subject. Perhaps because it is a "benign" condition that "does not affect" the health of the child has not been further investigated. But how bad is it and how much do you suffer when you are suffering? No doubt we thought that just to avoid the bad time there would have to have been much more research on the subject.

And is that really, today we continue to define colic under the criteria of Dr Morris Wessel. A pediatrician who wrote about it more than 40 years ago. What we have seen is that the percentage of children who suffer them is higher. Or, the percentage has increased, or was an error of approximation of the own doctor. Dr Wessel estimated that 20% of the children suffered from this dysfunction. To this day, we know that 1 in 4 children suffer them, that is, the percentage increases to 40%.

There are many pages where they give you ideas or suggest treatments for colic. It is a very generic topic and, although many times the advice is similar, it is always important to consolidate and have a very clear idea of how you want to focus on the treatment of your baby.

For example, a very complete article on colic appears on the Dodot website. They tell us how to know they are colic and not anything else. And they offer us a number of tips. Without a doubt, the most important is that if you see that your baby cries a lot and does not calm down, you should visit the pediatrician or the Primary Care Center team where you reside that you know your baby (you will find all the articles I refer to At the end of the article). However, we do not agree on the last advice they give about letting the baby cry if nothing works. We do not believe that such a small baby should be left to cry. You always have to take care of whatever it is that bothers you. As we have said before, a newborn baby would not be "spoiled" and should never stop being held for such a reason.

There is also a good article of babies and moms where they review all the issues that arise around the newborn when suffering from colic. Very interesting read to be reconnect. Like us, they differ very well a case of colic with a case of intestinal discomfort such as gas or disquecia. The gases and the disquecia are solved when you manage to generate intestinal transit. Colic, however, persists. We also believe in porteo to help reduce episodes of crying and generate contact. But look at the advice of infusions. A baby should not ingest anything that is not breastmilk or artificial milk. It should not be infused because it can be counterproductive. For example, in the case of star anise infusion, it has been proven that it can produce allergies and present neurological symptoms (see the livestrong article and the record maintained by the US National Library of Medicine). Then (at the end of the article you will find the link) we attach an article from We Have Kids, where he cites one by one the natural infusions that are usually given to babies and whether they can affect the newborn or not.

El Mundo published an article interviewing José María Paricio, a pediatrician and president of the Association for the Promotion and Scientific and Cultural Research of Breastfeeding (APILAM) and Amalia Arce, a pediatrician and author of the popular blog 'Diario de una mamá pediatra ', And we love his point of view. For the first time, we see an article that deals with the most emotional part of colic. Of the need to get the baby to squeeze it, to balance it, to sing it.

As you know, Kusi Wawa and his method are composed of two very important parts.

On the one hand, we treat the physical part of colic. We understand that colic begins because something hurts or bothers you in the belly and the baby is too small to manage that discomfort / pain. To treat it, we have created the Wawa Band that applies heat in the intestinal zone of the baby. In this way, it acts as an analgesic and reduces the sensation of pain. At the same time, the heat generates movement so that applied to the intestinal zone helps to generate traffic and to expel gases or stools that were stagnant. In addition, the thermal cushion also has a therapeutic aroma component to help relax both the baby and the dads. Apart from this immediate benefit, aromatherapy also helps to generate routine and after using the Wawa band for a while the baby learns to recognize the smell and benefits of using the Wawa Band and relaxes earlier.

The second element of the Kusi Wawa Method is the emotional support we give to the newborn. We believe that once the baby feels uncomfortable with the intestinal pain he despairs and can not calm down. Being so small, does not know how to deal with this feeling and needs all the emotional support we can give to get relax. In this part, it is where the arms of mom and dad play a very important role. You have to pick up the baby, hug him, rock him, sing him .... In short, help you to calm down. To apply this part, we follow the teachings of Dr Harvey Karp in his book "The Happiest Baby on the Block" where we define the 5 S. They are actions that we can do with the baby that helps them relax . As we always say, we treat this as a guide, but we always have to adapt it to your baby and do what he / she likes more.

The 5s Theory is the following:
1. Swaddeling. Wrap the baby in a lullaby. Like a strong hug, we are practicing containment so that the baby feels accompanied. Containment helps prevent rapid movement of arms and legs, helping you to stop getting more nervous with so much movement. It's like a strong bear hug, but it allows you to make other moves.
2. Side / stomach. Place baby face down or side. Find the position you like best and take it that way.
3. Shush. Make a white noise to help you relax. A Shhhh, a song ... whatever your baby prefers and you see that reassures you more.
4. Swing. Balance it
5. Suck. If your baby needs the suction to relax and use the pacifier, give it to him. This last point varies a lot according to the baby. Especially if they breastfeed they will not use a pacifier. So, another tip might be that you have calmed down, if you breastfeed you can help you stay relaxed for longer.
