My baby has gas

My baby has gas
When the child has gas, the belly swells and the pain, sometimes, can be very intense. What are the causes and how to alleviate this disorder?

To describe the disorders caused by what is generally called "air in the belly," doctors use different terms. Let us see, in detail, these definitions and their subtle differences.

1. Aerophagia: occurs when the child eats or drinks very quickly, or when he is very distressed and fails to eliminate the air he has inspired.
2. Meteorism: This term is used to indicate the excessive presence of gas in the intestine, which causes pain. It can be due to the swallowed air, that is to say, to the airfagia, or to the fermentation of the foods that have been ingested.
3. Flatulence: occurs when the body attempts to free itself from accumulated air, due to airborne or meteorism. It occurs in two ways: air can be removed through the mouth, belching, or through the anus, with the expulsion, sometimes noisy, of malodorous gases.

Symptoms and Causes

The main symptom of this disorder is the swollen belly and the pain that can sometimes be very intense. Contrary to what is commonly thought, it is not the amount of air that causes pain, but rather the sensitivity of the intestine which, in some people, is more pronounced than in others.
In most cases, the gas is formed in the area of the large intestine, after the action of the bacteria that are normally present there. When the food is ingested, in addition, during the digestion, the amino acids and the proteins, when they split, form hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane. Sometimes, in addition, flatulence derives from intolerance to some foods, such as milk. Reducing the amount of milk, or eliminating it from the child's diet, always under the indications of the pediatrician, the situation improves.

The emission of gas is usually an embarrassing situation but, from the medical point of view, it is not worrisome. Once the cause is known, one should act on a case-by-case basis: teach the child to eat slowly, eliminate food that produces gas, drink after meals and offer the child the pacifier only during sleep.

How can I help my baby feel less pain?
